This is the story of Wigan.

This film was commissioned by Wigan Borough Council at a genuine moment of change, when the town centre stands on the edge of a new chapter.

As Wigan begins to reimagine its future, People Make Wigan looks beyond architectural plans and regeneration strategies, and focuses instead on what has always defined the place. The people. Their work. Their pride. The everyday effort that gives the town its character and its sense of self.

“When the Roman’s came, they spent 250 years nicking our clay, coal and iron.”

The film reflects on the past with care and respect, recognising the skill, graft, and industry that shaped Wigan over generations. It sits firmly in the present, capturing a town in motion, where change is happening not just around people, but with them. And it looks to the future with quiet confidence, creating a sense of excitement grounded in belonging, rather than promise alone.

A single voice carries the film from start to finish, offering reflection rather than explanation. It speaks to shared experience and collective memory. To the steady confidence that comes from making, building, and contributing over time. Pride is never overstated or forced. It is felt, earned, and understood.

“But our story isn’t over yet!”

People Make Wigan was created to instil a renewed sense of self belief in the town and its people. To remind audiences that progress does not replace identity. It grows from it, shaped by those who live and work here.

This film connects Wigan’s history to its future through the people who care about the place today. Because regeneration may begin with buildings, but pride begins with people.
